LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team concluded the indoor portion of its 2013 schedule with a 6-3 victory over Winona State University, a NCAA Division II program.
Carleton raised its record to 7-2 as the squad handed the Warriors (8-1) their first loss of the year. This also marked the Knights’ second victory over a D-II squad this season, having defeated St. Cloud State in the season opener on Feb. 1.
Winona State entered the evening with a combined 23-1 doubles record, but Carleton took two of the three matches tonight. First-years Mikayla Becich (Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) and Grace Davis (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) teamed up for an 8-5 victory in the second slot, while rookies Julia Krumholz (Fy./Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Joyce Yu (Fy./Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei American School) posted an 8-2 decision.
The Knights’ depth was the difference in singles action. Molly Hemes (Jr./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) won her fourth straight match, this time prevailing 6-0, 6-1 over previously undefeated Laura Lindstrand at the fourth slot. Claire Spencer (Fy./Newport News, Va./Menchville) and Felicity Flesher (Jr./Oxford, Miss./Oxford) also topped their opponents in straight set victories. The final Carleton point was delivered by Anne Lombardi (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who won in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
After taking a hiatus for winter term finals, Carleton will travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for a week’s worth of competition beginning with a March 25 tussle with Oberlin College.
