Knights Race Well Against Top Competition at MSU Open

Friday’s Results | Saturday’s Results

MANKATO, Minn. – The chips might have been stacked against them. The Carleton College women’s track and field team did not send its full squad to the meet, and those that were entered, competed against a field comprised mostly of Division I and Division II student-athletes. Despite those odds, the Knights turned in some solid performances during the MSU Open hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato.

On Friday, seniors Simone Childs-Walker (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), Alison Smyth (Billings, Mont./Billings West), and Taylor ffitch (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) placed second, third and eighth in the 3,000-meter run. The 28-runner field included six NCAA Division I racers and 17 more from Division II programs.

The other top results came in the middle distance races.

Sarah Trautman (So./Lexington, Mass.) and Colette Celichowski (Fy./Shorewood, Minn.) were the top Division III finishers in the mile run, finishing at 5:15.49 and 5:17.03 respectively as both recorded personal bests. Kaitlin Randolph (Sr./Drummond, Wis.) ran a solid race as well, crossing the line at 5:23.28.

Ellie Wilson (Fy./Roseville, Minn.) won her heat of the 600-meter run, crossing the line at 1:41.70. Clare Franco (Sr./Brunswick, Maine) finished eighth overall at 1:41.49 as she ran her first race at that distance in about a year-and-a-half.

The Knights 4x400 meter relay continues to drop time. Haley Johnson (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn.), Wilson, Anna Persmark (Fy./Eugene, Ore./South Eugene), and Franco trimmed four more seconds off their seed time, finishing fifth at 4:05.54.

Carleton hosts the College of Saint Benedict in a dual meet on Friday, Feb. 3.
