NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s track and field team hosted its lone indoor meet of 2012 on Friday night, welcoming competitors from the College of Saint Benedict and St. Olaf College.

“This team does an incredible job every time they step onto the track or into the ring,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks. “They put in a lot of heart into their performances.”

The mile run featured a spirited battle between Alison Smyth (Sr./Billings, Mont./Billings West) and former teammate Laura Roach ’10. Smyth was on a mission and prevailed with a personal-best time of 5:08.91. Roach did finish second, followed by Taylor ffitch (Sr./Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) who PR’d as well at 5:17.80.

Megan Erlandson (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) continued her development as an all-around track athlete with a busy night. She not only won the pole vault (10 feet, 6 1/4 inches), but she also ran the second leg of the 4x200-meter relay, ran to a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a personal-record time of 3:09.01, and ran leadoff on Carleton’s B team in the 4x400 relay.

The Knights gave a glimpse of what the future may hold as Anna Persmark (Fy./Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) leadoff the winning 4x200 relay and the second-place 4x400 relay. She also was first to the line in the 400-meter dash at 62.75.

Her classmate Ellie Wilson (Roseville, Minn./Roseville) stepped up by winning the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 26.63. She also ran a leg of the victorious 4x200 meter relay.

In the field events, Kao Sutton (So./Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools) placed second in the shot put (10.57m) and third in the weight throw (11.88m).

The Carleton men’s track and field team officiated the meet, marking the occasion by donning their Sunday best. Some members of that squad could be seen wearing top hats, bow ties, and even suits. At the conclusion of the competition, the men’s team bestowed the Carleton women with roses. They even recognized the birthday of the St. Ben’s head coach by serenading her with “Happy Birthday” and presenting her chocolates.

The Knights will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Grinnell College (Iowa).
