Piergies paces Knights with 3rd-place finish in MIAC Indoor Pentathlon

PENTATHLON FINAL RESULTS (PDF)

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On day one of the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, three members of the Carleton College women’s track and field team competed in the pentathlon. Tonya Piergies (Sr./Kenilworth, Ill./North Shore) turned in the Knights’ best result with a third-place, All-Conference showing among 17 competitors from across the conference.

Piergies finished with 2975 points, good for the best pentathlon total of her career and earning her All-Conference recognition. Eve Farrell (Fy./Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Anna Grove (So./Morris, Minn./Morris Area) took 13th and 14th, respectively, with scores of 2378 and 2363.

Piergies notched a solid result in the first event of the pentathlon, the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 9.81 seconds was good enough for fourth place and 748 points.

In the high jump, Piergies soared to a career-best mark of 1.51 meters, which earned her fifth place in the event and gave her 632 more points.

Next up was the shot put, in which Piergies put up a mark of 8.70 meters, good for 12th place (445 points). Then, the senior turned in her top result of the day, as she leapt to a mark of 4.95 meters in the long jump and placed third, adding 546 points to her total.

In the final event of the day, the 800-meter run, Piergies took seventh place with a time of 2:37.36, and the 604 points she earned in the event pushed her final total to 2975.

Farrell achieved several new career-best marks on the day en route to a 13th-place finish. In the 60-meter hurdles, she placed 17th with a personal-best time of 11.75 seconds. Later on, in the shot put, her career-best throw of 8.35 meters handed her 13th place. Finally, in the 800-meter run, she finished sixth with a time of 2:35.79, another personal best.

Farrell also took sixth place in the high jump (1.48 meters) and 16th in the long jump (4.03 meters).

Grove also achieved a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 10.43 seconds, good for 14th place. She took seventh place in both the high jump (1.45 meters) and the shot put (9.48 meters), and 15th in both the long jump (4.07 meters) and the 800-meter run (3:02.29).

With the third-place finish, Piergies contributed the first six points to the Knights’ team total.
