Piergies wraps up multi-event career with eighth-place finish at MIAC Heptathlon

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On day two of the MIAC Heptathlon, senior Tonya Piergies (Kenilworth, Ill./North Shore) wrapped up her multi-event career for the Carleton College women’s track and field team with an eighth-place performance. She racked up 3,878 points to lead the Knights, while rookies Sydney Marsh (Austin, Minn.) and Eve Farrell (Mahtomedi, Minn.) took 15th place and 16th place, respectively.

After four events were scored on Thursday, Piergies entered Friday in sixth place out of 18 competitors with 2,321 points.

She picked up right where she left off with a fifth-place finish in the long jump, notching a mark of 4.87 meters to earn 524 points. She remained in sixth place overall with 2,845 points heading into the penultimate event.

In the javelin throw, Piergies turned in another solid performance, taking fifth place with a throw of 29.37 meters. The 465 points she earned in the event pushed her total to 3310 points, but she still stayed in sixth place overall.

The final event, the 800-meter run, saw the senior finish in 10th place with a time of 2:40.44. She collected 568 points and ended up with 3,878 points overall, which placed her in eighth after all seven events were scored. Piergies finished only 34 points out of fifth place.

Marsh and Farrell began Friday’s action in 12th place and 17th place, respectively, with 2,024 and 1,861 points.

In the long jump, Marsh turned in a 13th-place result with a distance of 4.48 meters (423 points), while Farrell finished in 17th place with a mark of 4.15 meters (343 points).

Then, in the javelin throw, Marsh’s mark of 18.22 meters gave her 16th place and 256 points. Meanwhile, Farrell took 17th place with a toss of 17.61 meters, handing her 245 points.

Farrell ended on a high note in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:35.31 to take fifth place and 628 points. That impressive number pushed her total to 3,077 points, good for 16th place overall.

Marsh also saved her best for last, earning seventh place in the final event with a time of 2:38.64, giving her 589 points. She finished with 3,292 points after seven events, which put her in 15th place overall.

Piergies, Marsh, and Farrell will compete with the rest of the women’s team at the MIAC Outdoor Championships, beginning on Friday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul. The following day’s (Saturday, May 11) action will kick off at 2:00 p.m. as well.
