Schnirring repeats as 10K champion, highlighting top Carleton performances on day 1 of MIAC Outdoor Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Samantha Schnirring (Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the charge for the Carleton College women’s track and field team on day one of the 2019 MIAC Outdoor Championships. She repeated as champion in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 36:55.80.

Carleton sits eighth of 12 teams heading into the final day of action at the conference meet. The Knight have amassed 20 points, with half of those coming from Schnirring’s victory.

Also competing and placing in the 10K race was sophomore Emma Greenlee (Aurora, Minn./Mesabi East), who took fourth with a time of 38:01.93, good for five points.

In the 1500-meter run, a cohort of four Knights advanced to Saturday’s final. Marietta Geist (Jr./Crookston, Minn.) led the way with a third-place finish in her heat, clocking a time of 4:52.14. In the other heat, Natalie Marsh (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also took third with a time of 4:54.55. Elizabeth Zimmerman (So./Chevy Chase, Md./Sidwell Friends School) turned in a fifth-place result in her heat in 4:55.15 to advance, while Berit Hudson-Rasmussen (Jr./Champaign, Ill./University Laboratory) finished in fifth in the other heat with a time of 4:56.03.

Tonya Piergies (Sr./Kenilworth, Ill./North Shore) enjoyed a successful day with impressive results in several events. The senior competed in the long jump and earned fifth place with a mark of 5.30 meters, good for four team points.

On the track, she advanced to Saturday’s finals of the 100-meter hurdles after placing third in her heat with a time of 16.16 seconds.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Elsa Sandeno (Sr./Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) crossed the finish line in 1:04.47 to take second please in her heat and move on to Saturday’s finals.

Emma Thomley (Jr./Cannon Falls, Minn.) finished in third place in her heat of the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 59.06 seconds and advancing to the finals tomorrow.

The 800-meter run saw Amy Kropp (Fy./Logan, Utah) earn third place in her heat with a time of 2:20.32. With the result, the first-year qualified for the finals of the event.

The second and final day of action for the Knights will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.
