Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial) Observance
To commemorate Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Memorial Day, the Carleton Chapel has invited Twin Cities resident and Holocaust survivor Manny Gabler to share his story with us. Manny’s family fled Nazi-occupied Germany in 1937, first to Italy, and then to one of the only places accepting refugees – Shanghai. Some 18,000 Jews found their way there. Manny and his family lived in what some call “the Shanghai ghetto” until 1948. We invite you to come meet Manny, and learn his story, and that of so many others who desperately sought refuge; and to glimpse this most unusual and fascinating period in Jewish and Chinese history.
The event will be preceded at 4:15 PM by a reading of names of victims, and some teaching of Yiddish songs. At 5PM there will be a short Jewish service open to all, followed by our speaker and conversation. Dinner follows at 6PM, to which all are welcome.
