Resistance to Counter Insurgency in Southern Mexico
On Thursday, November 7th, at 5pm in the Library Athenaeum, Mariana Hernández-Burg will present a talk titled 'Resistance to Counter-Insurgency in Southern Mexico.' Mariana will speak on the realities facing Indigenous communities in Mexico such as militarization and mega development projects. Professor Hernández will share insight and analysis from the grassroots communities struggling against these neoliberal schemes, namely through their development of autonomous institutions and defense of the land. Professor Hernández brings more than 20 years of experience in community organizing and popular education to her work. She received her anthropology degree at Mexico's Autonomous Metropolitan University in 2011 and has taught = intercultural, bilingual education related subjects at two public universities in Mexico City. She is currently the head professor for the Autonomous University of Social Movement's Chiapas program.
