Convocation with Dylan Miner

Fri, November 6, 2020 • 12:30pm - 1:30pm (1h)

Dylan A. T. Miner is a professor at Michigan State University focusing on indigenous and anticolonial issues. An art historian as well as a practicing artist, his art is deeply rooted in the history of indigenous peoples as well as their current struggles. Miner is from Michigan and is of Métis descent. His book Creating Aztlán: Chicano Art, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Lowriding Across Turtle Island, employs indigenous and Native American methodologies to show that Chicano art needs to be understood in the context of indigenous history, anticolonial struggle, and Native American studies. Miner uses the two avenues of history and art to promote a progressive dialogue, and is finding a wider audience as he moves from street art and indigenous cultural centers to art galleries. 'There are different ways of working together, on an equal basis,' he says. 'We have to reclaim those small spaces, our stories, and use them to create better and more just world.'
