Andrew Chael and the Event Horizon Telescope

Black Hole Imaging Astronomer to Speak

A black hole is an object so dense that nothing, not even light, can escape its gravity.  Astronomers have long been hoping to make an image of the “event horizon,” the edge of a black hole’s dark zone.  Finally, last month the first such image was released by a worldwide collaboration of astronomers, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration.

One of the astronomers central to the task, Andrew Chael '13,  has just defended his Harvard PhD thesis on this project.  He has made it a special priority to return to Carleton now, only a month after  the announcement of success, in order to tell us about this exciting project.

Chael will be presenting his lecture, “Photographing a Black Hole with the Event Horizon Telescope,” Tuesday May 14 at 7 PM, in Carleton’s Olin Hall Room 149.  All are welcome.
