The Fascist ‘re-conquest’ of Cyrenaica during the 1920s featured escalating levels of atrocity.  Ultimately, colonial military authorities decided to destroy the native population’s religious, political, economic, and cultural patterns of life, mainly by interning civilians in desert concentration camps. This talk attempts to uncover the motives behind Fascist atrocity.  Was there anything unique about Fascist colonial violence?  What purpose did this wholesale destruction serve?
