Hard Questions: Science, Religion, and Ethics

Mon, April 27, 2020 • 7:00pm - 8:00pm (1h) • Zoom Meeting

In the age of COVID-19, we are being faced with numerous real-life issues related to the intersection of science, religion, and ethics.  So, for a few of our meetings this term, we will tackle debates that are especially relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We're working on bringing in professors as guest speakers for a couple of these discussions too!  At the same time, I know that many of us may feel overwhelmed by the constant COVID-19 news, and so we are also planning a few discussions on unrelated topics throughout the term.  Please feel free to attend as many or as few discussion as you'd like.  Everyone is welcome, even if you've never had a chance to join us before!  For questions and zoom link, please contact babajidec, dogarr, or bromana.

May 18:  Individualism vs. Collectivism in Confronting COVID-19.  We'll chat about a range of questions relevant to current events:

  • How have debates about individualism vs. collectivism played out in policies and responses to the pandemic?
  • When are we obligated to act for the greater good versus acting in our own personal interests?
  • How do we define 'the greater good' -- for example, choosing between people at high risk for COVID-19 and people who may be impoverished by economic shutdowns?
  • How have different cultural values shaped responses to COVID-19 across different countries?
  • Under what circumstances should governments step in to enforce collectivist policies?

Join us for an interesting, informal discussion and good company.  All are welcome, even if you've never joined us before! 🙂
