The Population Ecology Earthworm Lab utilizes several plant community types in the Arboretum to sample earthworms. This laboratory exercise looks at differences in what earthworm species are present, their populations and how these differ between plant community types with differing land use histories. A mustard solution is used to saturate the soil in the sampling plot, causing the earthworms to come to the soil surface within a few minutes. Earthworms are then collected and counted.
