Rehearsal Room & Sound Equipment

We have a variety of sound system options for student use depending on your needs and type of event. Click on the option that best suits your needs for more information.

1) Goodhue Rehearsal Room - For private rehearsals by individuals or student bands. Room is fully equipped with a PA system, drum set, amplifiers, microphones, cords, etc. No equipment may leave the room. Maintained by the Student Activities Office.

2) Traveling Performance Equipment - A PA system, drum set, and amplifiers for keyboard, bass and guitar are available for students bands to use for performances. Maintained by the Student Band Union (CSA student organization).

3) Portable Sound System - There is one sound system available for registered student events. Maintained by the Student Activities Office.

Goodhue Rehearsal Room

The purpose of the student band rehearsal room is to provide Carleton students a private space to further develop their musical skills outside the classroom. Access to the room is available to all students; enrollment in music courses is not required. The space is a 13'x17' sound-insulated space equipped with various music equipment commonly used by live bands. The room is managed and maintained by the Student Activities Office (SAO) in association with the Student Band Union (SBU). The project was funded by the Student Activities Office (SAO) and the Carleton Student Association (CSA).

Hours of Operation

  • Daily (during academic term): 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • The room will be offline during campus events, breaks, reading, and exam days.


  • Only approved students who have completed orientation may reserve and use the space.
    • Orientation sessions will be offered once per term on the first or second Thursday during common time in the Goodhue Superlounge. 
  • Access will be granted via a student OneCard.
  • All non-Carleton guests must be accompanied at all times while in Goodhue. You are responsible for the actions of your guests.
  • No food or beverages are permitted.
  • No smoking.
  • Equipment provided must not leave the room.
    • Loss of access to space may occur if found responsible for the removal, damage, and/or misuse of the equipment. Fines may also be applied to the students account(s).
  • There is equipment available for check-out (separate from the rehearsal room) that is maintained by the Student Band Union. See Student Band Equipment Reservation process below (link).
  • Personal equipment and instruments may not be left in the room. Carleton College is not responsible for lost or damaged personal property.
  • No practice can take place before or after hours of operation.
  • A student group/soloist may reserve the space for up to two 2-hour sessions per week.
  • Reservations are first-come first-serve for approved students.
  • The band room door needs to be closed any time an instrument is being played.
  • Close any doors nearby the practice room prior to practicing to help reduce noise throughout the building.
    • This includes the hallway doors near the Hall Director Office and the door at the top of the stairwell leading up to the Goodhue Superlounge.
  • Please complete the closing check-list (posted in the band room) at the end of your performance time:
    • Take out any trash
    • Turn off equipment, including all amps, PA system, and lights
    • Confirm that the air conditioning temperature is set at 75⁰F (remote is located on the wall, near the drum set)
    • Remove all personal equipment and instruments as you leave
    • Report any missing/broken equipment to the Student Activities Office
    • Ensure the main door is closed securely and locked
    • Rule of thumb: Leave the room in a better condition than you found it

These policies will be reviewed and updated regularly based on use and student feedback. Your input is welcome.


Reservations may take up to two (2) business days to approve so please plan in advance. Reservations are monitored by the Student Activities Office to help ensure fair access for students. Questions regarding reservations can be directed to: Hanah Diebold (hdiebold), x4462.

  1. Go to: EMS Web App (formally called Virtual EMS)
  2. Click on My Account
  3. Log-In using your Carleton username and password
  4. Click on Reservations, then click on Room Reservations on the drop down menu
    • Date you need the room. You have the option to select recurrence if you would like to practice multiple times per term and/or week. Note: Dates must be during the academic term and is offline during breaks, reading and exam days.
    • Start and end time. Note: hours of operation are 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. daily
    • Under “Facilities”, select Goodhue Hall from the drop down menu
  5. Complete the “When and Where” fields
    • Attendance can be anywhere from 1 - 10 people
    • For “Set-Up Type”, please select “Standard/As-Is”
    • Click “Find Space”
  6. Complete the Setup Information
  7. Select “Goodhue Band Room” by clicking on the green plus button
  8. Click the yellow “continue” box
    • Event Name: “Your Band Name or Individual Name, Rehearsal”
    • Event Type: Rehearsal
    • Client Details: If your student group name is not on the drop down menu, select “Other-Student”, then complete the rest of the client detail fields.
    • Other Information:
    • Catering: Select “No”, there will be no food at this event
    • Facility Set-Up: Select “No” we will do our own set-up and clean-up
    • Budget Code: Type NA
  9. Complete the “Event”, “Client” and other “Information Fields”
  10. Click the yellow “Submit” button
  11. An approval email will be sent to the primary contact on the reservation within 2 business days.

Traveling Performance Equipment


  • All equipment checked out must be returned in clean and working condition.
    • Loss of access to space may occur if found responsible for the loss, damage and/or misuse of the equipment. Fines may also be applied to the students account(s).
  • We request that equipment is picked up no earlier than two (2) hours before the time of your request and returned to the storage location in Sayles-Hill 029 no later than two (2) days from the end time of your musical event.
    • If another group/artist is in need of the same equipment, adjustments will be made to this timeline.
  • For events on-campus, the equipment can only be used at registered events.
  • Students are responsible for arranging for transportation of the equipment if needed.


  • Reservations are made on a first-come first-serve basis for student performances held on or off-campus
  • Reservations for the Student Band Union (SBU) equipment can be made by e-mailing starlackr@.

Portable Sound System

There is one portable sound system available for registered student events. To reserve the sound system visit the Student Activities Office. We will assist you in reserving the right system and accessories for your event. The sound system requires electricity and does not run on batteries.


  • All systems and/or accessories checked out require an agreement form to be completed on behalf of the student(s) that check out the system. 
  • All equipment must be returned in clean and working condition. Unclean, damaged or missing equipment will result in fines applied to the student's account.
  • All equipment must be returned after the event has concluded during normal business hours.
    • Ex: If you have an event on Saturday, the system needs to be returned Monday morning. Late fines may apply.
  • Equipment can only be used at registered events. If the event is shut down by a college official, the system can not be started up again or moved to another location.


  • Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis for registered student events.
  • Reservations for sound systems are made in person in the Student Activities Office.
  • Equipment can only be used at registered events.

Sound System Inventory:

  • Fender Passport Pro: Used for small speaking engagements or events with background music. It is an all-in one system with two speakers and a mixer/amp with up to 6 inputs.
  • Sound System Accessories
    • Microphones come with a cable, a microphone stand and clip. We have up to 3 microphone stands and up to 6 microphones for check-out at any given time.
    • Ipod/Computer adapter
    • Extension cords

Please Note:

  • We DO NOT have lights, disco balls, or strobe lights available for check-out
  • We DO NOT have fog machines available. They should never be used in any College facility (except for Cowling Gymnasium) as they may set off the fire alarm.
