  • Concrete Repair and Replacement Projects

Please note the following tentative schedule for concrete repair and replacement projects:

    • Sayles Hill: Work will begin the week of July 11, and be completed by July 22. A portion of the surface on the front porch (picnic table area) will be demolished and replaced with granite. Handicap access to the building will remain open at all times but there will be significant disruption to other use of the space. After the porch is completed, the brick pavers on the front plaza (the area below the steps) will be removed and replaced with granite. Access to the ramp and a portion of the front steps will remain open at all times.
    • Johnson House: Repair of the areas damaged by the utility repairs will begin around July 25. Depending upon the extent of the damage, this work will require one or two weeks to complete.
    • Other smaller, less disruptive projects around campus, including the Nourse east steps and Henrickson House west walk will be done late July or early August. Please contact me if there are specific events or conflicts in these areas that will require a change in our work schedule.

The deck of the concrete bridge near Goodhue (the one between the upper and lower lake) has been scheduled for resurfacing. This bridge is the primary connection between the central campus and the Rec Center. It is our intention to complete the project during the week of July 25. Depending upon weather, the tentative start date is Monday, July 25. The work will take approximately 2 days.

The bridge will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for the duration of the project. We will post the approach walks and include a map showing alternate routes. Pedestrians, bicycles, and golf carts may use the wooden footbridge that connects Evans and Goodhue. Motorized vehicle access to building across the lakes is via Highway 19 only.

The deteriorating steps on the west end of Olin (facing Music Hall) will also be repaired at this time. The west doors of Olin will be unavailable for use for the duration of the project.

  • No Parking Area―July/ August

Grounds will resod a number of areas on campus this summer, including the island in the road in front of Sayles-Hill. Preparation work will begin during the week of July 11, with sod installation the week of July 18. The four island parking stalls will be marked as "no parking" for the prep work and for the sod installation. After the sod is installed, we will continue to post the area as no parking during the morning hours in order to prevent water spots on vehicles when the sod is being watered.

  • Creating a Positive Workplace

    Full Content

We give of ourselves in different ways at work. The job we were hired to do consists of certain required tasks that are spelled out in our job descriptions. There may also be an unspoken expectation that everyone will do whatever is necessary to get the work done, even if it isn't in their job description. Maybe that sounds like enough to give on the job. But is that really enough to make for a positive, pleasant workplace?

Please pre-register online for ease of access and use confirmation code: 990017. Note: You must pre-register at least two hours before the start time of the seminar.

The dial-in number will be provided to you in your registration confirmation e-mail. Handouts will be available to download from the registration site, and are available through Karyn Jeffrey in HR atkajeffre@acs.carleton.edu

If unable to pre-register online, use the following call information for the seminar: call in phone number is: 1-888-253-4037, Passcode: 990017 and PIN: Enter the 10 digit phone number you are calling from.

Recorded Playback: A recorded playback will be available for five days from the teleconference date. The dial-in number and passcode are 1-888-348-4629 and enter the passcode 990017.

    Future Seminars:
August 10: Julie Van Noord, Journey Through Grief
September 14: Dana Kiel, Dual Careers: Stresses and Strategies
