  • Winter Term Convocations

Winter term convocations begin Friday, January 6, and are described online. There is also a link to access the audio recordings of past convocations. A luncheon is usually held following the convocations for the speaker and selected students, faculty, and staff. If you would like to have your name on the list of possible invitees for a particular luncheon, please e-mail kraadt@acs.carleton.edu. Since space is limited for the luncheons, we may not be able to include everyone who would want to attend. Luncheon invitations will be sent a week in advance of each convocation. The weekly convocation series is a shared experience that contributes to our collective education. Once each week students, faculty, and staff from across campus gather for an hour for a lecture or performance from specialists in a variety of disciplines. The goal of the convocation series is to provoke thinking and promote discussion outside the classroom on a broad range of subjects.

  • Tackle Your New Year’s Resolution At Work

Do your 2006 resolutions include losing weight or getting healthier? If so, join other Carleton faculty and staff by joining the "Weight Watchers at Work" program. The Carleton program started last January with many people achieving their 2005 resolutions―several members lost 10, 25, or even 50 pounds! We share cooking ideas, meal planning tips, cheer each other on, and celebrate as we achieve our goals. Although the 10-week series started in November, you are welcome to join the group (at a prorated rate of $59.75, which is $11.95 per week for the remaining 5 weeks in the series) or just sit in on a meeting if you have questions. To join or to learn more, attend the Wednesday, January 4 meeting in Sayles-Hill 251. Weigh-in starts at 11:45 a.m. and the 30-minute meeting starts at noon. Questions? Contact Kathleen Foley at x4721 or Liz Ciner at eciner@carleton.edu.

  • Follow-up for First Annual SAC and Forum Retreat

In reviewing our evaluations for The SAC and The Forum Retreat we were once again assured that the day was a success. The majority of the reflections of the day fell in the "excellent" and "Good" categories. This event provided professional development for 53% of our staff! SAC has put a more extensive wrap-up of the Retreat on their Web site as well as the speakers' presentation materials, the PEP’s video, and much more. See complete article for further details and Web site link.

In reviewing our evaluations for The SAC and The Forum Retreat we were once again assured that the day was a success. The majority of the reflections of the day fell in the "Excellent" and "Good" categories.

Staff really enjoyed the high energy and content of the speakers. Many comments were made on how they valued the blending of the two classified types (exempt and non-exempt) to interact and share thoughts.

This event provided professional development for 53% of our staff. We were so pleased to have 232 staff enrolled and to have our President and administrators encourage staff attendance. We plan to make this an annual event during the winter break time period and hope the staff that missed it this year will be inspired to attend next year.

Even though an event like this is a lot of work to put on, each of the members on our committee had a ball doing it. We are open to fresh ideas and new members if anyone is interested in being on the committee for next year. We will probably start meeting sometime mid-year to start the ideas rolling.

SAC has put a more extensive wrap-up of the Retreat on their Web site, as well as the speakers' presentation materials, the PEP’s video, and much more.

I wish to close by once again thanking all that were involved in planning this event:

    • The Retreat Committee: Jennifer Cox Johnson from the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, Doug Foxgrover and Patty Olson from Information Technology Systems, Patt Germann from Art and Art History Department and Science Education Resource Center, Robbie Groth from the Business Office, Mike Hendel and Kris Peterson from the Career Center, Linda Mueller from Admissions, Carolyn Soule from the English Department, and Melissa Thomas from the Dean of the College Office.
    • The College administrators for their part on the panel discussions and support on the Retreat.
    • Joe Winegardner and Ruth Anna Miller, along with their staff for the excellent food.
    • The PEP’s group and Phil Stark for the assistance with the sound system and entertaining video.
    • Patti Sabrowski and the facilities group for assistance with set up.
    • The student workers and everyone else who pitched in to make this event a success.

  • Eid al Adha Service and Celebration

The weekly Chapel service this week will be the Muslim Eid al Adha Service and Celebration on Sunday, January 8 at 5 p.m. in the Chapel. Eid al Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice (substituting a sheep for Abraham’s son, Ishmael), is the most important feast of the Muslim calendar and concludes the Pilgrimage to Mecca.
