If you are interested in learning about sustainability and creating a sustainability-related section in one or more of your courses, you will want to join faculty from Carleton and St. Olaf in the first "Cows, Colleges, and Curriculum" workshop. It will be a two-day faculty development seminar (June 19 and 20) designed to connect faculty from both sides of the river with resources for thinking about sustainability or environmental issues in whole classes, specific units, new readings, and/or assignments. • New Initiatives in Academic Civic Engagement

Academic Civic Engagement continues to be an important part of many Carleton courses, independent studies, comps projects, and not-for-credit experiences. This LTC session highlights at least three initiatives: 1) The College Board of Business Consultants, an effort to connect Northfield college students with local businesses "to study, research, and potentially solve real-world business dilemmas,” represented by Rick Estenson, Vice President, Business Development, First National Bank of Northfield; 2) Initiative for Service Internships in International Development, represented by Nazish Zafar ’07 whose summer 2005 internship was with Kitezh Children’s Community, in the Kaluga Region, Russia; 3) "Empty Bowls," a project of Carleton ceramics classes to benefit the Northfield Community Action Center, represented by Kelly Connole, Assistant Professor of Studio Art. In addition, representatives of the ACT Center will moderate the panel and also discuss their academic civic engagement initiatives, including identifying courses with academic civic engagement components, a new Web site, and others. Join us Tuesday, May 30 at noon in the Alumni Guest House Meeting Room.

  • Cogan Receives Rotary Service Above Self Award

Charlie Cogan, senior assistant dean of admissions and director of international recruiting, recently received the Northfield Rotary Club’s Marston Headley Service Above Self Award for outstanding service to the community, to international causes, and to the Northfield Rotary Club. The award is named for the late Marston Headley, Carleton Class of 1938 and long-time member of Rotary who was one of Northfield’s most dedicated citizens. Charlie has logged countless volunteer hours and thousands of miles working on behalf of Rotary. He spearheaded efforts to create a serology lab in Dapaong, Togo, that has the equipment necessary to diagnose hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and other blood-borne illnesses affecting thousands of African children. He led a team of Rotarians to Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso to immunize children against polio, and he was instrumental in developing a project to install 10 large water wells in the northern part of Africa. Closer to home, Charlie has served on the steering committee for the Jeff Amerman Pavilion project, is a member of the Human Rights Commission, and a volunteer mentor in the “Connecting Kids” program, to name just a few of the projects with which he is associated.
