  • Carleton Rolls Out a New Recycling and Composting Program Beginning Today

Single-stream, or "one-stream" recycling, will allow us to mix recyclable paper, plastics, cans, and glass in one bin for collection. Anything recyclable can now be put in any blue bin located throughout campus. This new collection process will make it much easier to recycle and will probably fill your personal office recycle bins much faster. Be aware that Custodial Services will now empty all small blue recycle bins when they are full. Click here for a flyer about the new programs and please read the entire article for more details about composting in the dining halls. The Carleton Web News story also has more information.

Carleton’s commitment to sustainability now includes composting. Food waste and other biodegradable materials will be collected for composting in the yellow compostable bins located at campus dining facilities. All utensils and plates used in the Snack Bar are made of biodegradable products and should be disposed of along with your food waste in the yellow compostable containers.

  • Convocations

The weekly convocation series for Fall Term begins Friday, September 21. Please click here for a list of convocations, as well as a link to access recordings of past convocations. Following each convocation, a luncheon is usually held for the speaker and selected students, faculty, and staff. If you would like to have your name on the list of possible invitees for a particular luncheon, please e-mail kraadt@carleton.edu. Since space is limited for the luncheons, we may not be able to include everyone who would want to attend. Luncheon invitations will be sent a week in advance of each convocation.

  • Terry Rivers' Resignation

With a mixture of delight for a valued colleague and a sense of loss for the College, we must announce that Terry Rivers has accepted a position as Recreation Manager at Massey University in New Zealand. He will be leaving at the end of fall term. Terry has served as Director of Recreation Sports and Manager of the Recreation Center since its opening in April of 2000. His vision, enthusiasm, and attention to detail have made Carleton’s recreation programs extraordinarily successful. Under Terry’s leadership our suite of offerings has become a model to which many other schools aspire. Terry’s employee wellness program (LifeStyles), has been instrumental in helping numerous faculty and staff implement and maintain healthy, recreational lifestyle choices. Please read further for more information.

Although Terry has enjoyed the challenges and successes of his Carleton position, the opportunity to return home to his native New Zealand is something he is very excited about. Massey is fortunate to have a person of such dedication, integrity, and professional skill joining their university.

Terry and his wife, Beth, plan to leave for New Zealand at the end of November. Please feel free to stop by the Recreation Center this fall to wish them both the very best of luck.

  • Fire Drills in Academic Buildings

In an effort to improve safety practices in academic and administrative buildings and to ensure life safety systems are working properly, Security Services and Facilities personnel will be conducting fire drills in academic buildings during the Fall Term. Each academic/administrative building will participate in a fire drill on an annual basis. Emergency Escape Plans containing fire safety instructions have been posted in the more public areas of each building. Please familiarize yourself with the information contained in the plan and discuss emergency evacuation plans within your department. See the rest of the article for the list of buildings scheduled to participate in the drills.

    Full Content

The Fall Term fire drills will occur during the week of September 24 through 28 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The following buildings are scheduled to participate in the drills: Scoville Hall, Goodsell Hall, Recreation Center, CMC, Language & Dining, Sayles-Hill, and Laird Hall. All building occupants are expected to evacuate the building when the alarm is activated. Once the building has been evacuated and it is determined that the alarm system has operated properly, Security Services personnel will silence the alarm and the occupants will be allowed to reenter.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
