Due to the increased demand for telephone numbers in the Northfield area, Carleton announces its implementation of a new phone exchange. Effective immediately, all calls originating off campus should begin with a 222 prefix, replacing the College's previous 646 prefix. All on-campus extensions will remain the same.

While the 222 prefix is effective now, the existing 646 prefix will remain in operation until July 1, 2008, to allow for a convenient transition. After that time, callers trying to reach the College from off-campus locations will hear a recorded message informing them of the new exchange. Carleton telephone numbers using an 800 exchange are not affected by this change and will remain the same.

In 1981, the College changed from 645 to 663, and in 1995, from 663 to 646 to accommodate additional numbers. The new 222 exchange will apply only to the Carleton campus and is expected to last longer than the previous changes.

Questions about the logistics or applicability of this change can be directed to the Telecommunications Department at x5422.

A friendly holiday reminder from ITS and the Web Services Group: 'tis the season when spammers, scammers, and fraudsters step up their already vigorous efforts to snag your personal information. Please be extra vigilant of their tactics.

    Beware of:

    • E-mails saying the IRS (or anyone else) owes you a refund.
    • Messages that appear to be from an online retailer like Amazon or eBay, wanting you to update your account information. Even if you do shop with the retailer in question, don't click links in the e-mail message—it's safer to go to their site directly, by typing into your Web browser the URL you already know to be theirs.
    • E-mails from a bank (even if it appears to be your own), especially if it says your account is frozen until you "update" or "validate" your information. Again, if in doubt, you should go to your bank's Web site directly, by typing the Web URL you already know. Do not use links in the e-mail message.

E-mails like those mentioned above often direct you to a Web site that looks legitimate but isn't. Their goal: to get you to provide personal information they need for identity theft or credit card fraud. Always be skeptical and cautious when any e-mail directs you to a Web site that requires you to enter an account number, social security number, credit card number, or other identifying information.

    • appreciation of the arts and of his/her place in it; and
    • eagerness to explore the possibilities of creative expression.
