  • Home Electronics Recycling Day for the Northfield Community

Do you have a home computer or TV that you've been wanting to get rid of but don't know what to do with it?

Carleton, St. Olaf, and Malt-O-Meal are partnering with Material Processing Corporation (MPC) to recycle personal/home computing equipment on Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at Carleton's South Stadium parking lot off of Highway 19. Watch for signs. (Please read the rest of this article for more details.)

Beginning this year, there will be a charge to dispose of electronic equipment.

    Fee schedule for recycling:

    • $35.00—TV’s 32”or larger
    • $20.00—smaller TV’s, large printers, large fax machines
    • $10.00—computer monitors, microwaves
    • $7.00—computer systems, small home printers, small fax machines, stereo equipment, VCR’s, DVD players, similar electronics
    • $2.00—electronic games, laptops, calculators, portable audio players, iPods, cordless phones, other small electronic devices
    • Free—cell phones, rechargeable batteries, keyboards, and computer mice

This disposal is for personal/home equipment and is not available to businesses. You can learn more about MPC on their Web site.

Why do we need to charge?
Due to the overwhelming response by residents in Minnesota, electronics manufacturers, who are required to pay for the recycling of residential electronics, have already met the recycling goals set by the State. Because electronics manufacturers are no longer required to recycle these items for free, the cost burden falls on the individual.

    Free Option

Best Buy offers another electronics recycling option. You can recycle most electronics for free at a local Best Buy store. See the Best Buy Web site for details.

If you have questions, please contact via e-mail either Sue Traxler at straxler@carleton.edu or Michael Decker at mdecker@carleton.edu.

    Monday, March 9
Faculty Reading Group on Academic Honesty
Recent scholarship on the definition of, and responses to, problems with academic honesty will form the basis of brief readings for this group. On February 9, John Bean joined us. He is Professor of English at Seattle University, and author of Engaging Ideas, a work that has influenced many of us as teachers. Those who have attended John’s December workshops know that he has few peers when it comes to thoughtful approaches to teaching undergraduates to promote critical thinking; the topic of academic honesty is one that we can fruitfully explore together.

4:30 to 6 p.m., Headley House, 815 East Second Street, refreshments provided
Co-sponsored by the College Writing Program and QuIRK (Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge Initiative)

Click here for a peek at the LTC Luncheons and Reading/Discussion Groups we are in the process of planning for Spring Term; please continue to check back as further details become available. Have a restful break!
