  • Tuesday, May 25: Last LTC presentation this year—Collaborative Research with Students in the Humanities: From the Classroom to "French Review" and "The Country Wife"

    Tuesday, May 25
How does Faculty Scholarship (and student/faculty scholarship) Influence Student Learning?

At Carleton, faculty have successfully connected students and scholarship in many ways. At this week's LTC event, two of our colleagues in the humanities, Scott Carpenter and Ruth Weiner, will discuss examples from their classes. Scott Carpenter's work with his students resulted in a paper published in French Review. Ruth Weiner and Tim Raylor's work with their students resulted in last term's production of The Country Wife, in all of its dimensions, from text to costumes to written program notes.

Graduation Gift Ideas: It is the beginning of the season for celebrating graduations and Carleton’s own graduation will be here before you know it. We have graduation cards and we also recommend the Book Sense Gift Cards, which can be redeemed here, at River City, and at participating stores around the country.

Check out the continuing article for information on some suggested book gifts (Landon Y. Jones's William Clark and the Shaping of the West and Ann Patchett's Truth & Beauty) and some of the new paperbacks now available.

    Full Content

Several new books would make excellent graduation gifts. Landon Y. Jones’s William Clark and the Shaping of the West presents Clark’s remarkable life and influential career in their full complexity. After the Lewis and Clark expedition, Clark spent three decades overseeing the expedition’s consequences: Indian removal and the destruction of Native America. In depicting Clark’s life, Jones captures not only the bloody ground of America’s early West but also the qualities of courage and character that made Clark a leader.

Truth & Beauty is Ann Patchett’s first work of nonfiction. The author of Bel Canto has written the story of her friendship with Lucy Grealy, the author of the critically acclaimed memoir Autobiography of a Face. Grealy’s memoir describes years of chemotherapy, radiation, and reconstructive surgery after losing part of her jaw to cancer at age nine. The two writers met in college and Truth & Beauty describes the unwavering commitment of their twenty-year friendship until Greely’s suicide.

Book of Lists: Subversive Facts and Hidden Information in Rapid-Fire Format by Russ Kick is a book you can just jump into anywhere and find unusual information. Look for criminal cops, banned movies, biblical contradictions, cigarette additives, and much, much more.
