    Skillpath Lifescripts Seminar, December 8
    8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., or 1 to 4:30 p.m., Leighton 304

We are very excited to bring an extremely popular SkillPath seminar to Carleton. The seminar is based on Stephen M. Polland and Mark Levine’s book “Lifescripts: What to Say to Get What You Want in Life’s Toughest Situations.” They offer a large variety of “Lifescripts” strategies which can be used in different life scenarios when you find yourself in a difficult and awkward situation. This seminar will assist you in determining what attitude and behavior to use—depending on the situation. It will show you the exact words to use in some of the most difficult life situations. Goals of the seminar are to teach you to minimize stress in painful conversations, stand up for yourself, tell employees what they don’t want to hear, and hold your own in tough situations. Both morning and afternoon sessions are offered for your convenience.

The following is a list of some of the topics that will be dealt with:

    Asking for an increased budget
Breaking bad news to a boss
    Maximizing a performance review
    Justifying an expense report
    Pitching a reluctant supervisor
    Asking for a deadline extension
Asking for relief from an assignment
    Criticizing a subordinate's work
    Turning down a raise request
    Adding responsibilities without adding pay
    Changing a subordinate's job status to part-time
Announcing a reduction (salary or layoff)
    Fixing a flextime problem
    Turning down a promotion request
    Confronting a backstabbing peer
    Tactfully suggesting better hygiene
    Firing an employee
Dealing with a client who is angry with your staff

We will not be having any booksignings at Carleton in December but there are many author events taking place at River City Books on Division Street.

On Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee will be discussing and signing their books. This River City event will take place at the Arts Guild.

Kate DiCamillo is the 2004 Newbery Medal winner for “The Tale of Despereaux,” and a national Book Award Finalist for “The Tiger Rising.” She was also a Newbery Award Finalist for “Because of Winn-Dixie,” which will soon be released as a major motion picture starring Jeff Daniels, Cicely Tyson, Dave Matthews, and Eva Marie Saint.

Alison McGhee is the author of “Countdown to Kindergarten,” “Snap” (the story of a young girl's first encounter with grief, and of the enduring power of friendship), and most recently “Mrs. Watson Wants Your Teeth.” In this book, the girl from “Countdown to Kindergarten” is back in a new lighthearted take on a scary problem─she's losing her first tooth, and thinks her teacher is an alien who steals baby teeth." McGhee is also the author of three adult titles, including “Rainlight,” “Was it Beautiful,” and “Shadow Baby,” which was chosen as a “Today Show” book club selection.

Author Jack Weatherford will be at River City on Friday, December 10 at 7 p.m. Weatherford is The New York Times’ bestselling author of “Native Roots,” “The History of Money,” “Savages and Civilization,” and most recently “Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World,” which is based on eight years of groundbreaking research in Mongolia. This history of the great conqueror argues that rather than a crude barbarian, Khan was one of the most progressive and influential rulers in all of world history. Mr. Weatherford is also an anthropologist who teaches at Macalester College in St. Paul.
