Summer Use of Carleton Facilities

During the summer months, when the college is not in session, the use of all facilities, including the use of all indoor and outdoor recreational/athletic facilities, will be governed by the policies listed below.

All facility use in the summer, which continues for more than one day, should be of benefit to the college and its programs. It should be overseen and directed by Carleton faculty and/or staff, have a clear academic purpose, and run under the supervision and guidelines established by the Summer Operations Committee co-chaired by Margi Youmansr (Summer Liberal Arts Institute) and Noel Ponder (Auxiliary Services).

  • The Summer Operations Committee will oversee the scheduling of all summer program use of facilities, including classrooms, residence halls, dining halls, public spaces, and indoor and outdoor recreational/athletic facilities. Exceptions include weddings and one-day events such as meetings, which will be scheduled by the Campus Events Office (Jana Lelm, x4443).
  • Carleton faculty or staff who wish to run a program in the summer should start preliminary discussions about the size and nature of their program, and their facility needs at least one year and preferably two years before the program is slated to begin.
  • Participants in summer programs, run directly by the Summer Liberal Arts Institute, and pre-scheduled conference and events, run directly by the Events Office, will have first priority in the use of all program-related spaces, including classrooms, public spaces, residence halls, and recreational facilities.
  • The Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation (PEAR) Department, in consultation with the Summer Operations Committee, will schedule summer hours for the Recreation Center, pool, and other athletic facilities, for use by summer program participants, faculty, staff, and students. The PEAR Department will hire and supervise the necessary staff and lifeguards.
