Carleton's History in Fenyang

Carleton's relationship with Fenyang, China, began in 1907 with the arrival of alumnus Watts O. Pye as a missionary there. Pye was joined in 1909 by medical missionary Percy T. Watson and his wife Clara, who had been Pye's classmates at Carleton. Under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and with support from Carleton College, the Fenyang Mission included a church, school, and hospital. Today, the school and the hospital remain strong, and Carleton's cordial relationship with Fenyang has recently been strengthened and renewed.

This goal of this website is to serve as a brief presentation on the relationship between Fenyang and Carleton in the early 20th century, as well as an introduction and guide to the extensive information about this relationship that can be found in the Carleton Archives.
