2010 Census Poster Design Competition: Submission Deadline

Design a poster to encourage participation in the 2010 Census in Rice County, Minnesota. Submit your design by Feb. 22, 2010 to be eligible for a $200 prize, to be announced March 1, 2010.

Poster Competition PosterSince federal and state funding for many programs is calibrated to census numbers, accurate counts provide equitable funding. Yet many immigrants, and those in temporary housing, are not counted.

The Winning Poster Design will be printed and widely distributed around Rice County during March 2010, when forms are distributed for the April deadline.

Content: Text and images will encourage all residents to fill in the census form and be counted. The census aims to count everyone regardless of legal status and results are confidential.

Languages: English, Spanish or Somali. Design and message should be cultural appropriate to the target group.

Inspiration: Consult poster designs in the Carleton College Art Gallery exhibition, Latin American Posters, on view through March 11, 2010, and, Sampling the Census: Snapshots of the American Population, 1880-2010. Census Publications in Gould Library Government Documents, on view in Carleton’s Gould Library.

Design Submission Deadline:  February 22

To:  Laurel Bradley, Director of Exhibitions, Carleton College

Format: 11 x 17 inches. Use any materials and tools (manual or digital) that result in a flat, scannable design.

Design Guidelines: Bold, Clean image. Should read from a distance. Keep text brief and legible.  Image and text should work together. 

Prizes: $200 each for one Carleton student and one non-Carleton Rice County resident.

  • Posters designs will be judged by Maria Cristina Tavera, Minneapolis artist and curator, and by the public, reviewing submissions on display on the Carleton campus between February 25-28. 
  • Winners announced: March 1, 2010
