Supervisory Development workshop series

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018
9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Offered in partnership with St. Olaf, Fundamentals of Leadership offers hand-on learning for supervisors and developing leaders. The course will consist of five monthly meetings, alternating between St. Olaf and Carleton campuses:

Session 1: What's My Type + Why Does it Matter?

January 24 at St. Olaf College, Buntrock Commons, Valhalla Room

This interactive session uses the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). An emphasis on Communication, Decision Making, Change Management, and Conflict will be addressed while connecting to how to be a better leader/manager/supervisor.

Session 2: The Engagement Factor

February 21 at Carleton College, Weitz Center, Family Meeting Room (236)

This workshop provides a framework for supervisors and managers in higher education to implement research-based best practices around employee engagement. By understanding which "levers" to pull, leaders are able to "move the middle" through simple steps and easy to use strategies that focus on performance and retention in a higher education setting.

Session 3: Setting & Communicating Expectations

March 21 at St. Olaf College, Buntrock Commons, Valhalla Room

Effectively managing employee performance starts with clear expectations and goals. Developing a "line of sight" for employees is critical to their success on your team. This session will equip you with the tools and techniques to create clarity while delivering feedback on the how and what of employee performance.

Session 4: Conflict Fluency - The Art of Engaging + Harnessing the Energy of Conflict

April 18 at Carleton College, Weitz Center, Family Meeting Room (236)

As a leader you are often times put in the middle of staff and organizational conflicts. How you show up in the face of conflict has a direct correlation to your effectiveness as a leader on campus. This session explores ways in which to ENGAGE and harness the ENERGY of conflicts. We'll explore individual conflict style and determine leadership strategies that keep you on track to accomplishing your departmental goals and allow you to become more fluent in conflict.

Session 5: Surfing the Waves of Change in Higher Education Today

May 23 at St. Olaf College, Buntrock Commons, Valhalla Room

Change is like the tides of the ocean - they keep rolling in and it sometimes feels like all you can do is tread water to stay afloat. This session takes a proactive look at how to best manage yourself (and your staff) in an ever-turning sea of change. We will use the Wave of Change model, learn 6 steps to handle team negativity and learn brain-based strategies to help manage change even more effectively.
