Cultural Houses @ Carleton

Cultural Housing at Carleton College

One of the goals of the Office of Intercultural and International Life (OIIL) is to create a sense of community among the students we serve.  One of the ways we achieve this is through the Cultural Hosue Community.  OIIL oversees 4 houses, each with a different mission that provides students with a safe and inclusive space to call their own.  The Cultural Houses are designed to provide a culturally safe space for students of color, international students, and their allies willing to contribute to an environment that facilitates academic and personal success. The Cultural Houses provide a variety of educational, cultural, and social programs related to specific cultures and issues, while simultaneously providing a cultural comfort-zone.  All Carleton community members are encouraged to participate in all programs and meetings held at the houses: Asia House (Asian cultural house), Freedom House (African-American cultural house) and La Casa del Sol (Latin@ cultural house). For more information, please contact Toni Grant (agrant@carleton.edu) or Martin Olague (molague@carleton.edu).

Application Deadline:  Monday, April 6th  (Monday, March 2rd if you are off-campus during Spring Term 2015). Applications will be available by Friday, February 20, 2015 at 5pm.

After you submit your application, Toni Grant or Martin Olague will contact you to schedule your interview.  Interviews will take place during the afternoon on Thursday, April 9th and during the day on Friday, April 10th. Students who will be off campus during Spring Term 2015 will be interviewed during 9th or 10th week of Winter Term.

Please note, only new applicants and returners who wish to apply for the House Manager position will need to schedule an interview.

Asia House  (Hall House)

Asia House provides support to Asian and Asian American students and their allies at Carleton College. Educational and social programs aimed towards the understanding of Asian and Asian American cultures and issues are held throughout the year. All Carleton students are invited to apply to live in the house and to participate in Asia House programs.

Freedom House  (Williams House)

Freedom House provides a culturally safe space for students of African Diaspora and their allies at Carleton College, and contributes to the environment that facilitates their success. Freedom House residents provide a variety of educational, cultural, and social programs related to their culture and issues, while simultaneously providing a cultural comfort zone. All Carleton students are invited to apply to live in Freedom House and to participate in all programs and meetings.

La Casa del Sol  (Hunt Cottage)

La Casa del Sol is a house designed to serve both the Latin@ community at Carleton College, as well as their allies and the larger Carleton and local Northfield community, through educational and cultural programming. La Casa is an integral part of the Latin@ community at Carleton because it encourages academic success and community development. All Carleton students are invited to apply to live in the house and to participate in programming at Casa.

Intercultural Center  (Stimson House)

Stimson House serves as the programming center for the Office of Intercultural & International Life. Programs hosted at Stimson are open to all students, faculty, and staff. On a day-to-day basis, Stimson House is a safe space for students to come together to relax, socialize, meet, and study. Our hope is that Stimson House will also be a place where students can have informal but meaningful interactions with students from diverse backgrounds.  Housing options in Stimson House are reserved for student peer leaders who work for the Office of Intercultural & International Life.
