Writing Center Collaboration

Writing Centers and libraries make ideal partners for so many reasons. We both place the emphasis on developing students’ abilities both within and across disciplines, we both actively collaborate with the students we serve to achieve those students’ goals, and we both share the fundamental goal of improving our students’ abilities to marshal information in order to increase knowledge.

Here at Carleton, the Library and the Writing Center have collaborated formally since 2006, and the Writing Center moved into the Library building in 2014. The backbone of our collaboration is in the extensive training program that new writing tutors progress through over the course of their first year of work. One component of this training includes small group sessions with librarians to discuss information literacy, library basics, collaborative possibilities, and shared strategies for working with the students we serve.
