InterLibrary Loan

  1. Interlibrary Loan Information and Policies

    Interlibrary loan (ILL) is an essential and vital service that makes material available to patrons through borrowing and lending. The following information and policies govern interlibrary loan services at Carleton College.

  2. Who May Use ILL

    Interlibrary loan services are available to all current students, staff, and faculty at Carleton. A current Carleton username and password is needed to request materials through interlibrary loan.

    Interlibrary loan is a privilege and eligibility may be suspended when privileges have been abused.

  3. What Can Be Borrowed

    Library materials which are not available at either Carleton or St. Olaf College can be borrowed for study and research from other North American libraries. Material is borrowed and loaned in accordance with Carleton College's copyright policy.

    Items that are missing from Carleton Library, have been sent temporarily to the bindery, or are on order for the Library can also be requested through ILL.

    Interlibrary Loan will not request textbooks currently used and required for classes.

  4. Location of ILL Office

    The ILL office is located in Room 448, Gould Library. The office is generally staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Contact Brenda Hellen (x4257) with ILL questions.

  5. How to Register for ILL

    First time users. please complete the Illiad registration form.

  6. How to Request ILL Items

    You can request material directly through your Illiad account after you register. You can also request material through a database by clicking on the Request via Illiad link.

    Please include an accurate and complete bibliographic citation. Avoid an abbreviation of the title if possible.

    Please check Catalyst before you request items through Interlibrary Loan. For items held at St. Olaf College, request them through Catalyst. Illiad requests for material available at Carleton or St. Olaf will be canceled.

  7. Time to Receive ILL Materials

    Allow at least two weeks to receive materials. The length of time for materials to arrived depends on the lending library. Requests are processed Monday-Friday.

  8. Notification Materials Have Arrived

    When loans arrive you will be notified via e-mail. You can pick up ILL items at the Library's circulation desk.

    Articles will be sent directly to you.

  9. Loan Period

    The loan period varies and is determined by the lending library.

  10. Renewals

    Renewal requests can be made prior to the due date by logging into your Illiad account. Renewal requests are determined by the lending library. You will be notified if the renewal request is denied.

  11. Recall

    Interlibrary loan items may be recalled at anytime by the lending library and will need to be returned within two days.

  12. Restrictions on ILL Loans

    Lending libraries determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Loans designated for In Library Use Only must be kept at the circulation desk when not in use.

  13. Returning Materials

    All materials borrowed through ILL must be returned to the Library's circulation desk by the due date. Please leave the book band attached.

    Late returns, lost materials, or damaged materials jeopardize the ability of the Carleton Library to borrow from other libraries.

  14. Fees

    A fee will be incurred when ILL items are lost or when items are returned after the due date. The amount of the fee is determined by the lending library.
