Selections from the Watson Collection

Thu, May 30, 2019 • Gould Library, 4th Floor, Athenaeum

Percy Watson

After graduating from Carleton in 1903, Percy Watson went on to study medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Soon after earning his degree, he traveled with his wife, Clara French Watson ‘03, to work as a medical missionary in China’s Fenchow Province. During the years they spent in China, the Watsons established the only western style hospital in the region. The hospital served millions of people, trained medical professionals, and advanced Watson’s work in public health fighting infectious diseases. The Watsons gifted a number of pieces they had collected over the years to the college, a selection of which are on view in the Athenaeum.
