Global Carleton, Then and Now
In the century and a half since its founding, Carleton has expanded its horizons well beyond the fields and prairies of Minnesota. This exhibit draws upon materials from College archives and student work to illuminate Carleton’s history of global engagement. The College’s foundational foreign language programs, welcoming attitude toward international students, and tradition of service abroad gave rise to a flood of new ways to connect with the outside world, particularly after the Second World War. Today, Carleton students, faculty, and staff engage with global issues in increasingly innovative ways. Coursework, research, off-campus study, civic engagement, and campus life prepare students to, in the words of Carleton’s mission statement, “become citizens and leaders, capable of finding inventive solutions to local, national, and global challenges.” This exhibit was curated by Mikaela Auerbach '10, Program Associate, OCS & Global Engagement Initiative, in collaboration with Zoe Adler, Curator, Robert C. Larson '56 Art in the Library Program.
