Should Muslims get to Define the Study of Islam?

Tue, October 9, 2018 • 12:00pm - 1:00pm (1h) • Athenaeum

Who should define the vast tradition of Islam? The past has been a major element in internal religious disputes among Muslims since the time of Islamic origins. How should this fact affect our understanding of Muslims’ descriptions of Islam’s history? This talk explores whether and how traditions can be defined at all, and what kinds of categories and frameworks serve or undermine efforts to understand and think about identity.
