Crossing Borders and Building Bridges: History and Public Memory of Myanmar
From 1962 to 2015, the history of Myanmar was carefully filtered by the state to showcase selected events, cultures, and people through state-controlled media and education.
Since 2013, Professor Tun Myint and Carleton students have visited Myint's home country, conducting field research, interviews, and recording people's lives to learn how people's livelihoods and memories of the authoritarian state will shape the transition to a more open society and shared identity.
The result of this project is a living archive that will continue to record and display public memory and activities that speak to the economy, cultures, politics, and identity of people in this multi-ethnic society. The records within the archive will include memories shared by former prisoners, police officers, and military personnel who endured through the authoritarian regime from 1962 to 2015.
This exhibit was organized to mark and celebrate the launch of the digital archive.
