Decoro: Work in Porcelain by Juliane Shibata

Visit the library's entry and Athenaeum during fall term to see Decoro, an exhibit of recent work by Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Juliane Shibata ’01. After graduating from Carleton, Shibata went on to earn an MFA from Bowling Green State University. Since then, she has taught ceramics at Carleton and Hope colleges as well as The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
The Latin verb decoro is multivalent; it can mean “I decorate” or “I embellish” and at the same time “I honor” or “I respect.” While decoration on ceramics has a deep, rich history, pottery and decoration have long been regarded as subordinate to fine art, in part because of their association with functionality and domestic spaces. Visible in the pieces in this case are the influences of Japanese Mingei patterns, William Morris designs, motifs from the Italian Renaissance, and the feminist Pattern and Decoration movement, all traditions I embrace in my work. Employing floral patterns in a medium often disparagingly labeled as craft, I not only decorate but honor femininity and ornamentation.
