Heaviness (Pesadez): New Work by Xavier Tavera
Xavier Tavera is this year’s Dayton-Hudson Visiting Artist / Teacher in the Art and Art History Department at Carleton.
Born in Mexico City, Tavera has lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota since 1996. A photographer, filmmaker, and community organizer, Tavera is best known for powerful photographic portraits of members of his Latinx community in Minneapolis and beyond.
With this new body of work, Tavera applies his distinctive technical and visual storytelling skills to his experiences during the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of the Minneapolis police on May 25, 2020. In his words, “I am attempting to show unrest through objects, as opposed to violent outcomes.”
Please note: Gould Library is currently open only to Carleton Students, Faculty, and Staff.
Tavera will give a virtual artist’s talk during this academic year. Stay tuned for details.
