Every other year since 1996, Fred Hagstrom, Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art, has led an off-campus study program to the South Pacific. During the course, students make several books by hand. These books become visual travel journals in which participants develop representational skills, record experiences, and learn to see drawing as a way of understanding the world.

This display presents a selection of journals Hagstrom and program assistants Eleanor Jenson '01 (now Visiting Assistant Professor of Art), Mairead Koehler '17, Laura Nakasaka '17,  and Dylan Welch '08 made during these trips. Their pages offer a window into an ongoing conversation between artist and landscape.
