Campus Recreation Positions: Recreation Center, Cowling, and Stadium Desk Monitor

Purpose of the Position: As an employee of Campus Recreation, you represent Carleton College and the P.E.A.R. Department. You are a partner with faculty and staff. The people you provide a service to and with all depend on you to do the best job you can every time you show up for work. Under the direction of the Recreation Center Director and Assistant Director, these positions require staff to monitor all users in the Recreation Center, Cowling, and Stadium. Monitors provide professional, friendly service, that support the user policy guidelines. 

Recreation Center/Cowling Desk Monitor Responsibilities:

  • Check if recreation users have a valid ID Card
  • Greet users with a friendly smile and give assistance when asked
  • Be knowledgeable of the building hours, policies, and procedures
  • Schedule court reservations and check out equipment as needed
  • Answer phone and front desk questions
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures
  • Assist with the climbing wall equipment paperwork if needed
  • Opening/closing procedures
  • Record hourly building counts
  • Rack weights and complete hourly cleaning assignments
  • Any other duties assigned by your supervisor
  • Opening and closing procedures as assigned 

Stadium Desk Monitor Responsibilities:

  • Be attentive of and supervise users throughout the entire shift
  • Enforce user age and footwear policies
  • Opening and closing procedures as assigned
  • Greet users with a friendly smile and give assistance when asked
  • Be knowledgeable of building hours, policies, and procedures
  • Record hourly user counts
  • Complete hourly cleaning assignments
  • Any other duties assigned by supervisor

Qualifications: All monitors must be Red Cross CPR/AED certified (training provided if necessary). Student workers must also be responsible and punctual, which includes finding a sub if needed. Additionally, monitors should demonstrate such characteristics as: helpful, attentive, positive, interested, and hard-working. A staff shirt is provided for each staff member.

PEAR/Campus Rec. Team Leader Position (Previous 1-2 years of work experience as Monitor Staff required)

Team Leader Responsibilities:

  • Implement and carry-out PEAR/Rec. student staff training and scheduling meetings. (Beginning of each term at a minimum).

  • Creatively and clearly define and convey the tools and resources that are in place to help student staff do their daily duties and be available for review sessions and/or check-ins to make sure the important steps and details are understood.

  • Develop and create a constructive work environment utilizing leadership skills to help improve the function and service in the PEAR/Campus Rec. department.

  • Act as a Liaison between Rec. Administration and student staff, and be an accessible resource for issues that need solving in the Rec. work environment such as (tardiness, absences, and assigned duties).

  • Foster open and respectful conversations that improve the quality of work being done by team members.

  • Maintain weekly communications to team members to ensure staff motivation, responsibilities/necessary tasks, organization, and schedules.

  • Foster a healthy community both within the PEAR/Campus Rec. department and for the campus community at large by organizing and successfully implementing one or more campus wide events per term).

Carleton Lifeguard

Summary: Under general supervision, ensures the safety of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing and responding toemergencies. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of emergency
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Job Requirements:
1. Required Certifications: Must present current certification (American Red Cross Certification or equivalent) for the following:
        - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
        - Lifeguard Training & First Aid
2.  Experience (preferred): Prior work experience as a pool, waterfront, or water park lifeguard. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
