LING 231: Structure of Semitic Languages

This course will examine the linguistic structure (sound, form, and meaning) of a wide variety of Semitic languages. In class we will examine Semitics from a typological perspective and practice linguistic analyses on datasets taken from well-studied Semitic languages (e.g., Arabic, Hebrew). Throughout the term students will also “adopt” a lesser-studied Semitic language and investigate its structure. This project will culminate in an in-class presentation and final paper. Prerequisite: Linguistics 110 or introductory knowledge of Arabic and/or Hebrew language (Arabic 101, Hebrew 101 or equivalent)
