Human activity has fundamentally altered the biosphere, resulting in the development of novel ecosystems and driving a global rate of species extinction not seen for millions of years. The field of Conservation Biology aims to understand and address the impact of human activity on ecological systems. In this seminar, we will use contemporary primary literature in Conservation Biology to examine the causes and consequences of species extinctions, as well as to assess efforts to conserve species and communities. Prerequisite: One previous upper-level course in ecology or evolution, from Biology 210, 248, 321, 350 or 352
