MUSC 216: God, Emotion, and Meaning in Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Music

What is it about the music of a Mass or cantata that inspires a feeling of reverence? What about an opera’s music creates drama? What emotions can be spurred by listening to a symphony? In this class, students will encounter different genres and styles of music from the Baroque and Classical period and ask what—and how—each one communicates to its audience. Repertory will be drawn from Bach, Gluck, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven and will be placed in the context of major intellectual and political movements. Prerequisite: Music 110 or Music 201 or Music 204 or instructor permission
