The course examines art in India, the homeland of Buddhism, starting with an introduction to the historical Buddha and moving to the earliest Buddhist art, during the third century BCE. It then introduces the life of the Buddha and his previous lives through relief sculptures that provide an opportunity to see how artists in ancient India tell stories visually. After exploring some rock-cut sanctuaries and considering why caves were made for sanctuaries, the course will turn to the introduction of the anthropomorphic images of the Buddha and the colonialist/anti-colonialist debate regarding the “origin” of the Buddha image. Finally, the course will turn to the sites associated with the life of the Buddha and the nineteenth-century “discovery” and exploration of those sites, not only to examine the art that remains at those sites but also to think about how they were used in ancient times as well as how they are used today.
