Departmental Purpose

The Department of Security Services is responsible for maintaining security and providing emergency response at Carleton College. Security Services personnel provide patrol protection of the campus seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by a staff of professional security personnel. We are responsible for a full range of public safety services including crime prevention, crime and incident reports, investigations, medical emergencies, fire emergencies, and responding to all other incidents requiring emergency assistance.


In case of emergency, where ambulance, police or fire personnel are required, call 911 immediately! (From campus phones, dial 9-911) In other cases where assistance is needed, call Security Services at x4444, or (507) 222-4444. Carleton provides outdoor emergency telephones at several locations across campus.


Lockdown: Multiple buildings or the entire campus may be secured to limit and control access by non-authorized individuals on campus. Exterior doors equipped with an electronic locking system will be secured. Campus OneCards will NOT retain their access privileges. Access will NOT be granted into buildings by any persons other than Security and Law Enforcement, staff will be admitted on an exception basis only as determined by Law Enforcement.

Shelter-In-Place: Seek immediate shelter inside a building; stay where you are and wait for further communication from authorities.

Lockdown/Shelter-In-Place Procedures

  • Call 911
  • Remain inside rooms; silence cell phones
  • Close, lock doors when possible
  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • Turn off lights
  • Remain quiet; do not use cell phones except to call 911
  • If the room you are in does not have a lock, barricade the door with available furniture, equipment; tie door handle to something stable to prevent opening
  • Move to a location not visible to persons outside room; cover glass on door


Protect-In-Place: Fire stairwell landing; a place for the mobility impaired to wait to be rescued.
