2019-20 Application Instructions for Returning Students

It's Time AgainLike in the 2018-19 application year, returning students at Carleton will be able to apply for financial aid in two separate rounds.  This will again allow students and their families to complete the financial aid application process earlier.  It will be more convenient and be at a time when financial information for the next year is available.  Using rounds again this year will also allow Carleton's Student Financial Services Office to better use office resources in providing more effective help to students and their families on completing this important task.

Financial Aid Deadline Dates for 2019-20

  •                Round 1: January 7, 2019 (first day of Winter Term)

Notification of award by end of February

  •                Round 2: April 1, 2019 (first day of Spring Term)

Notification of award by end of May

Completed applications received by each respective deadline date will be reviewed and award decisions made accordingly.  Those applications arriving after the deadline will be considered during the next round.  Please note that these rounds do not indicate any funding priority.  All students in all rounds will be given equal treatment and consideration.

Applications received after the second round will be considered on a rolling basis.  However, award amounts will be based on available funding and may not follow Carleton's normal guidelines and practices for renewal awards.

To complete the 2019-20 application process, follow the steps below.Checklist

STEP ONE:

Make sure both student and parent(s) 2017 Federal tax forms have already been completed and submitted to the IRS.  Income information from 2017 will be used on the financial aid applications.  You should have W2's from all employers available.

NOTE: Carleton student employment earnings MUST be included on your taxes.

ProfileSTEP TWO:

File the 2019-2020 CSS PROFILE Application. Use Carleton College’s CSS code number 6081.

A valid credit card number must be provided to pay the processing fee.

STEP THREE:

Submit your 2017 Federal W2's to the College Board IDOC service. After filing your PROFILE, you will receive correspondence from the College Board instructing you to submit your W2's to their IDOC service on behalf of Carleton.  Carleton will be notified once they are uploaded and will have access to them.

We encourage families to utilize the document upload feature of IDOC rather than printing a cover sheet and mailing the tax information to IDOC.  Uploading is the fastest, easiest, and most secure way to submit these documents.  However if you are uncomfortable with this IDOC Smallprocess and prefer to submit your W2's directly to Carleton, please contact the Student Financial Services Office for further instructions.

STEP FOUR:FAFSA

Complete the 2019-2020 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or a Renewal FAFSA using your completed 2017 tax information.

When completing the FAFSA, please agree to the IRS data retrieval when prompted to automatically fill in tax information on the FAFSA.  This will help to avoid additional information requests to complete the Federal financial aid application process.

An FSA ID is required for a parent and the student.  The FSA ID is comprised of a username and password that is used online to login and complete your Renewal FAFSA application on the web.  Both the student and one parent with financial information on the FAFSA must have an FSA ID to electronically sign the FAFSA.  Without these electronic signatures, the FAFSA will not be valid.

If you have lost or forgotten your FSA ID, you can go to edit on My FSA ID and click “Forgot My Username” underneath the “Username” field to access the process of retrieving your information. If you have lost or forgotten your FSA ID password, you can go to edit on My FSA ID and click “Forgot My Password” underneath the “Password” field to access the process of retrieving your information.

STEP FIVE:Student Employment

If you are interested in student employment and have not been hired by a supervisor to work for the upcoming year, go to Student Financial Services website, login and complete the Student Work Preference Form by May 20th.  All Work Preference Forms received by this date will be given consideration for available positions. Priority consideration for open positions will be given to students with need-based financial aid.  Forms received after May 20th will be considered for remaining openings.

STEP SIX:More Information

The Student Financial Services Office may need to collect other forms and information. If needed, we will request them directly from the family and give instructions on how to proceed.

Do not submit these documents unless specifically requested by the college.

The request may include:

  • Federal Taxes: Signed copies of parent and/or student 2017 federal income tax return (including schedules and attachments). If the parent or student is not required to file taxes, they must complete the tax non-filer statement.  If you are unsure if you need to file taxes, help can be found here. You will be able to upload these document to the College Board IDOC service.  However, it is important that you upload or send only one set of tax information to the College Board.  We encourage families to utilize the IDOC service which is the fastest, easiest, and most secure way to submit these documents.  However if you are uncomfortable with this process and prefer to submit your tax documents directly to Carleton, please contact the Student Financial Services Office for further instructions.
  • Verification Worksheet (Dependent)
  • Other documents or explanations requested by the College
