The Buckthorn Menace (Continued)
November 4, 2007 at 9:22 pmNow that those rainy October days have passed, the Buckthorn Menace art installation can finally be viewed in all its glory.
Brightening Up the Bald Spot
November 2, 2007 at 5:44 pmArt installations have recently cropped up around the Bald Spot. Their vibrant colors, patterns and shapes put cheer into even the dreariest of walks to the East side of campus. The pieces include a hanging set of wire-wrapped cherry-red boxes, a row of wooden slats in white, yellow and red (led by a bunny!), and a cocoon-like wood and string structure coiled around a hidden tree branch near the Libe. If only we knew who put them there...
Iron Chef — Carleton Style
November 1, 2007 at 8:24 pmOpting out of scrumptious Sodexho meals, the comrades of Culinary House cook their own. It is their mission to broaden Carls’ culinary experience beyond greasy snack bar goods and ramen noodles. Carleton’s Slow Food Convivium also has a mission: to encourage people to slow down and enjoy their food instead of gobbling it on the run. Clearly, this was house-to-group match made in heaven. The two groups finally locked tongs at the first annual Iron Chef Carleton, a cooking contest extravaganza designed to let students show off their culinary chops.

The Cave Goes Fabulous with the Pumps & Pearls Girls
October 31, 2007 at 1:17 pmThe Pumps & Pearls Girls of St. Paul put on a magnificent drag show at the Cave last Saturday night. With lascivious costuming and performances to match, the nation’s first college-run pub was fantabulous for the night.
The Pumps & Pearls Girls are a ten-gal drag troupe that performs regularly at the Town House in St. Paul. The veteran queen, Victoria, was the first to grace the Cave and its brimming audience. She won her first drag queen tiara at the Town House in 1972 and was well-prepared to entertain the rowdy crowds. Her first act in particular, a bodacious dance to “Big Spender” (complete with crimson get-up) more than lived up to her award-winning reputation.
The Pumps & Pearls Girls’ bawdy acts lasted well into the night. In between performances, the hostesses skewered Carls of every flavor — gay, straight, bi and transgender alike. Oh, the revelry, the Cave will never be the same again.
Burn One Down: A Photo Essay
October 29, 2007 at 9:27 pmCarleton's smoking culture is far from visible on campus, but at least a couple of its members aren't shy about the habit.
Ping to the Pong
October 29, 2007 at 8:32 pmForrest Gump isn’t the only one who can make ping-pong championships look hot. Last Saturday Carleton hosted the regional championships for the collegiate sport.
Screw (Ahem…) Set Up Your Roommate
October 29, 2007 at 7:56 pmAh, the epitome of awkwardness. Social life at Carleton generally hinges on everyone’s quirky tendencies. One of the first things you learn during New Student Week group is how to say “awkward tortoise” in sign language (don’t ask). But nothing takes the cake, nay, the crown of awkwardness like Screw Your Roommate.

Women of Color Retreat 2007
October 26, 2007 at 2:00 pmFor over 14 years, the Women of Color Retreat has been an intensely cathartic opportunity for female students, faculty and staff. Each year, an eager group of women travel two hours to the seclusion of Camp Courage in Maple Lake, Minnesota. Through activities designed to promote self-reflection and thought, the experience is always rife with tears, songs, smiles, and laughs.
Climbing Carls Compete
October 22, 2007 at 1:57 amStudents competed at this year's Fall Term Bouldering Cave Competition, held at the Rec Center Saturday October 20 from 4-6. Dozens of students showed up, some to gawk in awe, some to climb, and some to make witty comments from the ground.
Will Sodexho Go?
October 13, 2007 at 4:10 pmWe love to hate them: Glorpy salad dressing, mystery meat, dried-out rice stuck to the serving bowl. If there’s one thing about Carleton that binds us together, it’s either Frisbee or griping about the taste of Sodexho food (or lack thereof).
So when the dining hall contract came up for renewal, it generated plenty of student interest. The Facebook group devoted to the contract renewal process, Carls for Delicious Dining, had 248 members as of October 11. That’s approximately 14% of the student body! About thirty students attended the Dining Hall Public Forum on Wednesday.

Use Your OneCard and Avoid Certain Death
October 12, 2007 at 10:44 pmEver wondered what life was like before the OneCard?
This fine film will take you back to the days when pockets were heavy with spare change and laundry cards, and keying into Myers could mean death-by-shovel.
