The 20th annual Off Campus Studies Photography Exhibit will open Monday, April 24 and run through August 15 at the Carleton College Gould Library. A travel photography workshop related to the exhibit will be held Tuesday, May 2 at 5 p.m. in the Library Athenaeum. Admission to both the exhibit and the workshop is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature the finalists from the annual photography contest held by the Office of Off Campus Studies. The 20-year-old contest is open to Carleton students who have participated in an off-campus studies program. This year the contest attracted 130 submissions from 50 students, who had traveled to places such as Mali, Bolivia, Russia and Sri Lanka. The judges, associate professor of geology Cameron Davidson, reference librarian Kristin Partlo, and studio arts senior Stephen Harris (Roseville, Minn.) have chosen 25 finalists.

The judges will award prizes in the categories people, place, and narrative quality. Also, a new category is being added this year—people’s choice. Through April 21, Carleton students, staff, and faculty members can vote for their favorite photo. Finally, the library will award a special prize for the best image of a library.

“One of the goals of the exhibit is to show the diversity of off-campus studies. It serves as both an aesthetic and informative event,” explains Margit Johnson, director of Off-Campus Studies.

The hour-long photo workshop will be led by senior Dave Holman (North Yarmouth, Maine), a veteran photographer and international traveler. Holman, who is majoring in Latin American studies and concentrating in environmental and technology studies, will talk about the ethics and aesthetics of travel photography.

Carleton College offers more than two dozen off-campus studies programs in a variety of subjects and countries. Both the College’s three-term academic calendar and its educational policies encourage participation in off-campus study. Seventy percent of the most recent graduating class studied off campus.

The Carleton College Gould Library is open daily. For more information and disability accommodations, call Margaret Pezalla-Granlund, Carleton’s curator of library art and exhibits, at (507) 646-7182.
