Want to Go to Heaven?

"Let's go to Hell!"

That was a common exclamation on Sunday night of midterm break, when the Heaven and Hell dance gave students the opportunity to ally themselves with the eternal forces of good or evil by moving between the Cave (set up with red lighting to look "hellish") and Evans Dining Hall (resplendent in white marble, and considerably cooler than the smaller, boiling-hot room downstairs).

Perhaps the best part of Heaven and Hell was the costumes. Some students went all-out with their costumes (drawn-on Satanic designs or angel wings; a halo, sword and cloak; vampire fangs; and for some unknown reason, an Elmo costume) and others went in groups for dramatic effect (the devil in a suit, with a fake whip from Ragstock, surrounded by "succubi" from his floor, all wearing identical red sequined horns). The balance was heavily skewed toward devils, with the occasional white-clad crusader for good adding variety to the sea of red and black.

Once the party got going, the music was loud and Hell was predictably steamy and debauched (Heaven was only slightly less so). Devils mixed freely with angels until 1 AM, at which point the mild blasphemy came to an end and the partygoers went on their way, reluctant to shed their costumes and become normal Carleton students again. Luckily, a holiday (you may have heard of it) is coming up that will give the student body another chance to dress up and be wicked. October 31, you cannot come soon enough.
