This is Amrit.

The information furnished on this page is mostly for my own future use and should not be taken to be absolutely sound technical advice. But, you may find it helpful nevertheless, in which case, hesitate not to shower me with monies and various other gifts.

Ok, here we go:

9/2/2004: Sometimes, freshly imaged Gateway E-4650's don't work with monitors with DVI cables (though they work with analog cables). The newest driver from Gateway's website (as of today) does NOT seem to cure the problem, but there DOES exist a version downloaded by Rebecca Hulett that works, and can be obtained most of the time from DDS.

: RAM in Gateway E-4600's (and probably in other flavors as well) has to come in pairs, pairs of 128MB sticks or 256MB sticks or pairs of "fillers" (blank or "fake" RAM, they look much like real RAM except that they don't have any "bulging" parts and are flat). Also, a RAM stick from a 4600 does NOT work with RAM from other flavors. Not knowing this can lead to lots, I repeat, LOTS of RAM swaps, struggles with resilient CPU cases and perambulations back and forth between the RAM installation site and CMC.

11/7/2004: French accents not showing in Word? Pages printing with very small font? Check to see if the whole text in Word is set to be superscript. Also, throw away Normal.dot (it may be set with superscript for all text).

11/7/2004: The NikonView software that comes with Nikon cameras comes with a license that allows installation on only one computer.

11/23/2004: The correct driver to install for the HP Color LaserJet 4600 is the PCL6 driver from http://www.hp.com (this driver usually is not pre-installed in Windows XP). Installing this driver gives you the option of saving printing preferences. The following are common printing preferences saved for the HP Color LaserJet:

  • Color One-sided (usually the default)
  • Color Duplex
  • 2-up Color Duplex (2 pages per sheet, set in the "Finishing" tab)
  • Letterhead
    • Not duplex
    • Different paper (usually from a different tray) for the first page (as set in the "Paper" tab)
    • Usually, source for first page: tray 2, source for other pages: tray 3

12/3/2004: The (apparently) new way to run HAT scanner on PCs is to run the following steps:

  • Map W: to the APPS server (\\apps.its.carleton.edu\apps).
  • Go to Apps\Windows\HEAT80\Scanners and run Inventor.bat.

12/9/2004: The correct settings to set up the Carleton LDAP server in Apple Mail.App are as follows:

  • Name: Any name you want (e.g. LDAP)
  • Server: ldap.its.carleton.edu
  • Search Base: ou=people,dc=carleton,dc=edu
  • Port: 389

Don't use SSL and you can leave the username and password fields blank.
