Mac OS X Netboot Imaging

Summer 2004 protocol for imaging Macs (new G5, all G4 >450MHz) by net booting. Netboot imaging of a new G5:

  1. Setup the new G5, keyboard, monitor and mouse, and plug into an active Academic (acad) port.
  2. Press and hold down the “N” key while you press the power button on the G5. Hold it down until a folder with a globe appears (it may take 2 to 3 tries on the new G5s to work). If the Mac has successfully netbooted, a terminal window will open.
  3. Follow the instructions given in the terminal window. (Note: Erase restore is best, make sure there is no needed data/files left on the machine you are imaging.)
  4. Once the imaging is finished, boot the machine and follow the new user prep instructions on the screen. In addition, change the name of the hard drive to "Macintosh HD." For lab machines, this is the last step. For faculty machines, follow the instructions on Setting up a replacement Faculty Mac.
