Backup step-by-step

  1. Install the client using the installer in Celeste/ACNS/Common/Archive/Mac/Utilities/Retrospect Client 4
  2. Note the control panel (at the end of the control panel list) options.
    • Backup can be toggled on/off.
    • The last backup and its success is noted.
    • Under preferences the wait at shutdown message can be toggled off.
    • The priority should be set to backup (otherwise, network errors can hang the backup).
    • Access can be set to read-only (backup but no restores).
    • Alert messages can be set both after a successful backup and after a backup-free interval has passed.
  3. Mark files and folder for backup. Any folder marked for backup will have its entire contents (all subfolders and files therein) backed up.
    • Any folder with "eudora" in its name in the System folder will be backed up.
    • Any file with "bookmark.htm" as part of its name in the System folder will be backed up.
    • Any file or folder with the string "(backup)" in its name will be backed up.
    • Any file or folder which is labeled with the "last" label. Since the user can change both the color and name associated with labels the only unique way to identify them is by their order on the label list. Retrospect will look for the last one on the list. It's probably a good idea (but not strictly necessary) to change the name of that label to something that indicates backup. You'll want to do a Find File on this label to make sure things you don't want backed up aren't coincidentally labelled this way. HomePage often includes hundreds of files labelled this way.
    • Any file or folder with the string "(exclude)" in the name will NOT be backed up. This rule takes precendence over all others. e.g. a file with (backup) in its name within a folder with (exclude) in its name will not be backed up.
    • Depending on the setting in the Retrospect control panel Preferences files and folders marked with an (option-8) may be excluded from the backup.
  4. Make note of
    • the hard drive
    • the machine name (both the hard drive name and the machine name in the File Sharing control panel)
    • whether the machine is running open transport (has a TCP/IP control panel).
  5. E-mail Sean (sfox@carleton.edu) ASAP with the information from the previous step. He will handle the following two steps on the network administrator side:
    • Activate the client. This must be done at the Retrospect server while the client machine is up and running.
      • From the retrospect server start Retrospect.
      • Under the Configure tab select Clients and then Network.
      • Select TCP/IP or AppleTalk depending on whether the client does or doesn't have Open Transport.
      • Activate using the next available security code (from the list) and configure.
      • Set backup to Selected Volumes.
      • Under the Configuration tab rename the client to something that includes the username and department (this won't effect the actual machine, just retrospect's database).
      • Set the security code to the one written on the license sheet.
      • Under the volumes tab select the volume you want to have backed up, presumably the main hard drive.
    • Add the client to an appropriate groups. This makes is easier to manage.
      • Go to the Volumes section of the Configure tab. Under the Network clients section put the new client machine in an appropriate folder, making a new one with the New Folder option in the Volume menu if necessary.
      • Drag the volume from the new client into an appropriate group under the source groups section. If necessary create a new source group using the New Group option in the Volume menu.
    • Add the client to the backup script. In the scripts section of the automate tab select the backup server script and the Edit option. Make sure the source group in the previous step is listed in the sources for this script.
