About Podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is a regularly updated set of audio or video files that you can subscribe to. When a new audio or video file is published, it is automatically downloaded to your device, where you can listen to it or watch it at your convenience.

For a more detailed explanation, see our Introduction to Podcasts article.

Apps you can use to listen to podcast

There are lots of mobile apps available for subscribing to podcasts. Tom's Guide has a nice round-up of popular podcast apps.. On iOS devices, there is an app likely already on your phone called "Podcasts" that is a decent choice.

On a Mac or PC, iTunes is likely the most popular program for subscribing to podcasts. Wikipedia also maintains a list of "podcatcher" desktop apps.

How to subscribe to a podcast

It depends on what program you're using.

  • With iTunes, you can just click on the "subscribe in iTunes" link, and iTunes will automatically subscribe to the podcast.
  • With other software, you will need to right-click (Windows) or control-click (Mac) or long-press (mobile devices) on the "podcast feed" link, and choose "Copy link location" from the contextual menu. Then go to your podcast app and follow the program's instructions for subscribing to a podcast, using the URL you have just copied.
